Abdominoplasty/Tummy Tuck
GENERAL FEATURES OF THE OPERATION
Abdominoplasty, also known as a tummy tuck, is a surgical procedure performed to remove excess skin and tighten the abdominal area for patients experiencing sagging or loose skin. This condition often occurs after pregnancy, significant weight loss, or bariatric surgery. The procedure is suitable for both women and men who have excess skin and loss of firmness in the abdominal region due to various reasons.
During the surgery, the abdominal muscles that have weakened or separated are repaired and tightened. As a result, the abdominal wall becomes firmer and flatter, restoring a smooth and toned appearance. Excess skin and fat are removed, and the position of the belly button can also be adjusted for a more natural contour. Although tummy tuck surgery cannot completely eliminate stretch marks, it significantly improves their appearance.
Ideal candidates for abdominoplasty are individuals who have loose or sagging skin in the abdominal area that cannot be corrected through exercise or diet alone. This procedure is especially beneficial for patients who have undergone weight loss surgery, experienced multiple pregnancies, or lost a large amount of weight in a short time. Both women and men can benefit from this operation to achieve a firmer, more sculpted abdomen.
Stitches used during a tummy tuck dissolve on their own and do not require removal. Patients are typically advised to wear a medical compression garment (corset) for about two months after surgery to support healing and maintain the new shape. Most patients can return to work within 2–4 weeks, depending on their recovery speed. Surgical scars gradually fade and start blending with the skin tone within 9–12 months. Maintaining a healthy diet and regular exercise routine will positively affect the healing process and help preserve the results.
While liposuction removes unwanted fat deposits, it does not address loose skin or muscle separation. In many cases, the best results are achieved when liposuction and tummy tuck surgery are performed together. This combination allows for both fat removal and skin tightening, creating a smoother and more contoured abdominal appearance without sagging.
