Women need these surgeries because of the appearance of their genitals or the discomfort they experience.
WHAT IS COSMETIC GYNECOLOGY?
Cosmetic gynecology, also known as aesthetic gynecology, is rapidly becoming one of the most popular subspecialties of elective surgery for women.
While these procedures are often labeled simply as cosmetic surgery, they also improve genital function.
WHAT IS LABIOPLASTY? (LABIOPLASTY)
Labiaplasty is surgery to reduce the size of the labia minora (small lips). The labia minora are the skin extensions on either side of the vaginal opening.
HOW DO YOU KNOW IF YOU NEED LABIAPLASTY?
If you are uncomfortable with the appearance of your inner lips or experience discomfort when wearing tight clothing, doing certain exercises, or having sexual intercourse, labiaplasty may be an option.
HOW IS LABIOPLASTY PERFORMED?
Labiaplasty can be performed in an office setting using general anesthesia or local anesthesia with sedation. It involves shortening or reshaping the vaginal lips. Unwanted tissue is excised with a scalpel or laser. The loose edges are stitched shut with thin, self-dissolving stitches.
IS LABIOPLASTY PAINFUL?
Labiaplasty is a well-tolerated procedure, and you shouldn’t experience much pain or discomfort. Once the procedure is complete, you can move around immediately without assistance.
HOW LONG DOES LABIOPLASTY TAKE TO HEAL?
Initial swelling, pain, and temporary discoloration will subside within the first few weeks after surgery. For most patients, swelling can persist for up to six weeks. However, it may take four to six months for the postoperative swelling to completely disappear before you see the final results of your labiaplasty.
